These chairs are designed to be used in contact sports. During the games, the chairs may bang into each other, but they are tough and durable enough to withstand the punishment and continue functioning properly. They also include important safety devices such as seat belts, and can be adjusted in various ways for comfort and improved mobility. Depending on the sport, the athlete may need the seat raised or lowered, the wheels tilted out at an angle, and the leg or arm rests to be positioned in a very particular manner. Court chairs offer all of these possibilities and more. Many athletes have their chairs custom-built to conform to the shape of their bodies and to be better prepared for that specific event.
Wheelchair basketball
One of the most popular wheelchair court sports is organized basketball. This game got its start following World War II when many wounded and paralyzed veterans wanted to continue playing the sports they loved. Around 1946, the first teams were formed, and just a few years later it became a widespread and popular activity. As the sport continued to grow, leagues were formed internationally, and wheelchair designers began to look for ways to make the chairs easier to operate while on the court. The chairs began to be manufactured in more lightweight styles and featured advancements in turn ratio and center of gravity. Today, basketball court wheelchairs can move at incredible speeds and are designed to stay centered and not tip over. They allow players to be very active in a high energy and fast-paced game.
Wheelchair tennis
The game of wheelchair tennis became popular in the late 1970s, largely due to the efforts of two athletes who experimented in techniques for playing it from a chair: Jeff Minnenbraker and Brad Parks. When they met in 1976, they began discussing the game and the best design for a chair that would allow them to play at a high rate of speed. They worked on custom designs that became the basis for the advanced chairs that are available today. These chairs are capable of moving at incredible speeds and have a very high turn ratio, allowing players to move around the court in every direction in pursuit of the tennis ball. Today, there are wheelchair tennis leagues and tournaments worldwide, and the game is played by many in these remarkable chairs.
Wheelchair users have the ability to participate in a wide range of sporting activities. Some of the other fast paced games that are played include hockey, high-speed racing, and even body-building. As technology advances, new designs will continue to be implemented to produce better and more court-adept chairs for wheelchair athletes.
