Manual wheelchairs, also commonly referred to as standard wheelchairs, are designed to give users the power of self-propulsion so that they may get around on their own. If you travel excessively, you may prefer a power wheelchair.
Rigid frames
Wheelchairs with rigid frames are collapsible for easy storage and transport. These frames are made out of light materials so that they are easy to push when in use, and they can usually be loaded into and/or unloaded from a vehicle by the chair operator without any assistance. Most of these frames allow the wheels to be removed easily for transportation purposes, at which point the wheelchair would weigh between 10 and 20 pounds to make it far more manageable.
Folding frames
These frames are constructed in such a way that they will not take up much room in a vehicle or any location where they are stored. Folding frames tend to be heavy, so they may require assistance when loading and unloading them from a vehicle. The primary benefit of these chairs is their ability to adjust to a very small size for storage purposes.
Hemi Option
The hemi option in a manual wheelchair allows the owner to determine the distance from the seat of the chair to the ground. This feature is usually adjustable from about 15 to 18 inches, which enables some chair users to move forward by using their feet. Depending on the seat height setting, it may also be possible to include footrests.
The weight of most manual wheelchairs typically starts at about 35 pounds, which makes them easy to push and maneuver. Many of the features of the chairs are customizable, such as foot and leg rests, color schemes, width of the seat, angle of the chair back, and other optional accessories. They are designed to give the users a significant amount of customization in both the operation and look of the chair.
