Power wheelchairs (also referred to as electric wheelchairs) provide mobility to users without requiring a them to manually move the wheelchair themselves or have it pushed by another person. The batteries for these chairs are designed to last for a long time so that chair users may enjoy a full day of use without having to worry about losing power.
Basic models or power chairs
Electric wheelchairs are available in three standard models. The first is front-wheel drive, which is designed to make very sharp turns. It allows users to turn the corner very quickly and not have to stop in order to maneuver around obstacles. The second is the mid-wheel drive chair, which is capable of making extremely sharp turns. These chairs have extra wheels at the front end to help them make these turns. The third model is the rear-wheel drive, which are the most commonly used type of chair. If you are looking for a chair that moves at a high rate of speed, this one is for you.
Indoor chairs
Chairs that are specifically for indoor use have smaller wheels and are built to make tighter turns. These chairs will need to go around corners and move past obstacles such as furniture on a regular basis, so they have a sharper turning radius than outdoor chairs. They are also constructed of lightweight materials because they are intended for use on smooth, even surfaces.
Outdoor chairs
Wheelchairs that are used outdoors are generally larger and have bigger wheels. They allow users to ride over most any type of terrain, including dirt paths, cracked pavement, and even sand. Outdoor chairs provide great traction and can travel across most any type of ground condition.
Battery options
Most electric wheelchairs rely on either gel or wet batteries as their power source. While wet batteries offer the most potential power, some models do require that a small amount of water be added on a regular basis. You may want to consider this when determining which battery is right for you.
Power wheelchairs allow users to go most anywhere they choose. Some models are also collapsible, so transporting them is less of a concern. Some models can also include an automatic shutoff timer if the chair has not been used for at least 30 minutes. This ensures that the battery power is not needlessly drained. The power can be restored by a quick push of a button on the control panel, and the panels may be placed on either side of the chair to accommodate both left and right-handed users. These chairs provide considerable personal freedom and mobility to their users.
