Racing Wheelchairs

Wheelchair users participate in almost every type of sport, from billiards to hockey, but the most common, and perhaps oldest wheelchair-related sport is racing. Racers compete in specially designed chairs that can move at high speeds. The chairs are very light and aerodynamically made so that they can dash through the courses with little wind resistance. Athletes who participate in competitive events or just race for their own enjoyment will need a chair for these activities that is separate from their everyday chair. They have the option of seeking out racing wheelchairs that can be customized to the size and shape of their body for the most perfect fit possible.

The standard style

Almost every racing wheelchair comes in a three-wheeled model, with two large wheels in the back and one smaller wheel centered in the front. They are operated by a hand crank system that is similar to a pedal on any standard bicycle. The chairs are made of stable materials that can withstand heavy winds and a lot of use. A racing wheelchair will offer the rider a high level of security and a powerful frame that is crash resistant. The chairs allow the user to ride in three different ways:

Kneeling

Most wheelchair athletes prefer the kneeling method. The user will place their knees on the seat of the chair and have their feet behind them pointing out of the back. This method is used by racers who have partial use of their legs, and it affords them great balance and stability.

Feet forward

Racers who have limited or no power in their legs will most often use this method, which involves placing the feet towards the front of the chair while sitting in the seat. The feet rest on a strap that will hold them in place throughout the duration of the race.

Amputee sling method

Athletes who have had their legs amputated above the knee can utilize a special sling that will fasten them to the chair during the race. Once the competitor has been secured, they will be ready to operate the hand crank and start the event.

Ultra lightweight frames

Some racing bikes are available with very light frames that allow the rider to go even faster. These chairs are designed for serious racers who compete professionally. The frames are sturdy enough to provide the necessary safety features, but they will not slow the competitor down with extra weight.

Racing wheelchairs allow chair users to not only participate in racing sports, but to excel, reach high speeds, and cover very long distances. They are ideal for any chair user who has a competitive nature and wishes to participate in organized racing.
