The two most common types of wheelchair cushions are foam and air styles, but there are several other options available as well. Chair users who are interested in something different may choose from some of the following:
Sheepskin Cushion
These cushions are made out of medical sheepskin. This not only makes for a notably stylish chair, but it also helps the user avoid the onset of sores and bruises by relieving pressure between the skin and surface of the seat and encouraging proper posture and circulation. They are also designed to maintain a lower temperature during the summer and a warmer temperature during the winter, which will help the chair user avoid extreme weather conditions.
Gel Cushion
Cushions fabricated from gel material are often used by people who spend the majority of their time in a chair. They are designed to help alleviate problems such as back pain, arthritis, and sores that develop from long periods of inactivity. The cushions are very stable, so they offer a high level of support to improve posture and the overall condition of the person using a wheelchair.
Egg crate Cushion
These cushions are designed in a similar fashion to standard egg crates. This is done to give the cushion extra support and to provide better circulation to the person who is using it. Although this is a type of foam cushion, it is very different in look and feel than conventional foam models.
Bariatric Cushion
A bariatric cushion is a combination of gel and foam. The two types of cushion complement each other to provide a highly comfortable and supportive cushion. Each cushion responds to the person who is sitting on it to uniformly distribute the weight across the surface, which will result in better posture and comfort for the user.
Back Cushion
Wheelchair users may also want a cushion to help protect and stabilize their backs. Most every type of seat cushion on the market will also have a wheelchair back cushion available as well.
Cushions not only provide comfort for wheelchair users, but they also help to improve posture, increase circulation, and can even show off some of the user.s flair if they have been customized. Every type of cushion is easy to clean and maintain, and with a little bit of care, can be kept in good condition for many years to come.
